About the Author

Born in a small town in Ohio, Oliver published her first book of poetry in 1963 at the age of twenty-eight. Over the course of her long career, she has received numerous awards. Her fourth book, American Primitive, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984. She has led workshops and held residencies at various colleges and universities, including Bennington College, where she held the Catharine Osgood Foster Chair for Distinguished Teaching. Oliver currently lives in Florida. Her newest collection of poetry, Devotions, is in sale 10/10/2017.

If you ever wondered how Mary Oliver perceives poems, she tells you in this book on Felicity fittingly in a poem:That pretty little beast, a poem, has a mind of its own.Sometimes I want it to crave apples but it wants red meat.Sometimes I want to walk peacefully on the shoreand it wants to take off all its clothes and dive in.Sometimes I want to use small words and make them importantand it starts shouting the dictionary, the opportunities.Sometimes I want to sum up and give thanks, putting things in orderand it starts dancing around the room on its four furry legs, laughing and calling me outrageous.But sometimes, when I'm thinking about you, and no doubt smiling,it sits down quietly, one paw under its chin, and just listens.This is one of my favorite poems in this winsome collection. It gives you a spirit of the book ~ lots of felicity and charm.

Yes, the book is short. But then, Mary Oliver's work always leaves me wishing there was just one more poem.Yes, the poems themselves are brief. But then, is not that the way of love? Brief moments, snatches of time we etch into our hearts with permanent ink. Only later do we realize that the ink may have been permanent but the pages wear thin and disappear. We are left with savored fragments, like the simplicity of the "gesture of your hand reaching for me."Yes, I was surprised when I realized I had reached the end. But as her poems remind us, "Things take the time they take. Don't worry." "It's mostly attitude. I'm certain I'll see something." Their brevity allows our hearts to "remember, remember."And so five stars and a bow, "All I know is that 'thank you' [Mary Oliver] should appear somewhere. So, just in case I can't find the perfect place- 'Thank you, thank you.'"

It is not an over exaggeration to say ...I l adore Mary Oliver. I was fortunate enough to hear her read here in Seattle some years ago and I fell in love with her poetry right on the spot and in a way her. Reading her work is like taking a walk with a friend through the woods or having a conversation about "Maybe" for hours. I will read every book she ever writes, we have journeyed together over the years and we both have changed and I have seen her changing in her writing...she has not noticed mine at all...of course I have never had the chance to tell her, and what importance would it be to her? It will be just a secret between me and the rest of the reviewers.

Essential beauty breaths through this memorable collection of Mary Oliver's poetry. I just loved it. My dearest friend died in October and this was a great support to me in my grief. The poem in memory to Tom Shaw encapsulates some of my deepest feelings and then, to share in the love Mary feels in her life helps me celebrate the love that was (and is in some ineffable way) between my friend and me. Thank you, Mary, ever putting what is beyond words into some form that gives space beyond language. What a gift you share with souls such as I am.

Once, a friend was sharing with me some of her favorite poets. She said, "Well, first of all, Mary Oliver. Of course." Yes, of course, I replied, too ashamed to admit my ignorance of a poet with whom I obviously should have been well-acquainted. Immediately after that conversation I began to read everything I could find by the incredible Mary Oliver, and I'm thrilled that I did. This new collection of love poems and meditations on happiness is simply perfection. Her eye for the natural world is as sharp as ever, but her verses on love and the experience of emotions like joy and happiness are what truly stir the heart in this volume. The final line in the book is sure to resonate with each reader of this precious work: "It must surely, then, be very happy down there in your heart. 'Yes,' I said. 'It is.'"

I absolutely adore this book which is filled with the richness of love, relationships and nature. There is an abiding spiritual sense flowing through these poems which are deep but accessible. A few of my favorites are Don’t Worry, Moments, I Wake Close to Morning, Whistling Swans and Everything That Was Broken. But…dig in anywhere. You will be so very glad that you did!

Mary Oliver is a treasure. This book is wonderful, a raw and honest glimpse into the heart of a true observer. Mary Oliver has the great skill of putting the wild and wonder of love into words, but not too many of them. This is a must for any fan of Oliver, but also for anyone longing to put words on their own experience of love.

My husband and I read this book when we were dating. We've been married for seven years. Now we gift it to anyone thinking about getting married. It poses trivial questions about daily life that you probably would not think of on your own. Sometimes the same questions are worded differently. This can be annoying or get you to approach the same subject from a different prospective. For some of my friends, this book allows one partner to discuss a sensitive area (spending habits, family) without the other person feeling attacked.We went through the questions during road trips as a way to pass time. Not only did we get to know each other better, it was a confrontational way to discuss issues for which we had strong feelings. Plus, when the eldest of four marries an only child, holiday spending and family priorities are important topics. Eventually we would have gotten to most of these topics on our own, but it helped create a stronger foundation for our marriage.One commenter wrote that this book doesn't ask philosophical questions. That's true. Hopefully, those types of things are discussed while you're enjoying a meal. This book will ask if it is okay to lend money to family or where to spend holidays. Topics that are better discussed before marriage than argued after the nuptials.

My fiancee and I are seperated by thousands of miles, due to his military career, I'm on the east coast and he's on the west coast, so this book has really been a blessing to us.Because of the physical distance, this book has given us a lot to talk about that we wouldn't have even thought of, due to the seperation. My best friend's wife is a non-religious couples therapist, and she has her clients go through this book together. I got this a Valentine's gift for my boyfriend and I to work through, as we were getting pretty serious and started thinking about getting married. This was the best thing that every happened to me, relationship-wise. As we started to read through the book, we both realized how much we didn't know about each other and how much we vastly differed on our responses to the questions presented in this book. Ultimately, we couldn't get through the chapter on money, and our lack of compromise led to our break-up. I don't think this book is meant to make you end your relationship with someone, but it does make you think. It helped me get a frame of reference about building these thoughts in a the start of relationship and working through them slowly. I would say I'm in a much healthier relationship now and this book helped me create a better foundation at how I should be approaching a relationship and communicating with my partner.

I was expecting better conversation ideas from this. I was really bummed out the questions in here were some of the following. Do we eat meals together? Who is responsible for shopping? Do we have a sense of our own style? Wasn’t a book where you close it and feel like you had a great conversation with your partner. My fiancé and I did go through it together(he’s a trooper) felt like we only found one good question.

I give this to every engaged couple I believe will benefit. Even if the reader thinks certain questions don't apply, the book encourages conversation and communication. All the right questions in one place. Our nephew and his girlfriend are in the process of reading every single question and both are finding it extremely helpful. Some couples I've given this to have rolled their eyes. It's their loss.

I disagree with previous writers who say the questions are childish, or for people with a short engagement. We had a long engagement, and found this book to be quite stimulating. I will agree that some of the questions you hopefully have talked about before becoming engaged, but others we hadn't thought of.Also, the book is supposed to spur discussion, contemplation, and conversation, and the questions are not supposed to elicit just at one sentence answer. Developing good communication is a must for any marriage, and this book is great at sparking discussion and debate. It is nice that it has questions like "What do you think a father is supposed to do?" as the answer to these can vary greatly from person to person. If you discuss these types of questions before even getting married, you will be able to have realistic expectations of your future spouse, knowing better his/her beliefs and expectations of you too. The point of this book is to find out if there are huge discrepancies in your backgrounds, morals and values, so that you can work through them before they become an issue, and destroy your relationship.The thing I liked best about this book, is that while reading it, in answering a question, we would often get into conversation about things that were related, but not necessarily asked in the book.I think this book is great for married couples, as well as engaged couples.

This is a good book to read if you're engaged or in a serious relationship considering engagement. It will help you (or you with your partner hopefully) figure out where you might have issues to resolve now or potentially in the future if you do decide to marry. I wish more people read books like this one before saying yes to the dress (or diamond).

This book should be required reading for anyone contemplating marriage. I wish I had had it some 45 years ago before I married. It would have made a huge difference in the learning curve in going from the single, carefree life to "wedded bliss." It is not all about the wedding, dress, gifts and party. It is about the life you live afterward.
