Karel Mulder (1956) trabaja como profesor titulado del Departamento de Tecnología, Política y Administración, de la Universidad Tecnológica de Delft, en el grupo Dinámicas Tecnológicas y Desarrollo Sostenible. Se graduó en Ingeniería por la Universidad de Twente y se doctoró en Administración de Negocios por la Universidad de Groningen (1992). Su área de docencia es la innovación industrial, los desafíos sociales para la innovación y los efectos de las innovaciones en la sociedad. Sus actuales intereses de investigación se centran especialmente en el desarrollo sostenible para la innovación. Fue presidente del Departamento de Tecnología y Sociedad del Royal Dutch Institute of Engineers de 1994 a 1999, y estuvo a cargo del proyecto de introducción del desarrollo sostenible en los planes de estudios de ingenieros en la Universidad Tecnológica de Delft de 1997 a 2005. Los ingenieros se hallan en una posición privilegiada y muy influyente para innovar, diseñar y construir un futuro sostenible. Sin embargo, ¿están comprometidos en ello o no demuestran interés alguno? ¿Tienen los conocimientos necesarios o padecen una cierta ignorancia? En este sentido, al salir de la universidad tenían que ser capaces de incorporar el concepto de desarrollo sostenible en sus diseños y prácticas cotidianas. Este libro refleja la cantidad enorme de conocimientos reunidos a través de la enseñanza de las mejores prácticas para ingenieros. Tiene por objeto ofrecer a los estudiantes de ingeniería los fundamentos necesarios para afrontar el desafío que el desarrollo sostenible plantea para la profesión; comprender la aportación de los ingenieros al logro de los objetivos corporativos y ambientales de la sostenibilidad, y conocer las barreras y las dificultades que hallarán en su desempeño profesional. Esta obra, a un tiempo concisa y completa, analiza las herramientas, las habilidades y las técnicas principales que se pueden utilizar en el diseño y la gestión de la ingeniería para prever los costes y los impactos de los esquemas de ingeniería en las etapas de planeamiento, implementación y descarte.
